Last week I had my second race of the year. Already doing way better than last year! Both have been sprints which I think was a great decision. I’m looking forward to the Olympic distance races coming up.
Lake Guntersville Triathlon was my first race of the year; really enjoyed the course. the swim was marginally choppy, but I was orders of magnitude more comfortable than last year in the open water. Temperature was perfect and it wasn’t overly crowded. I still swam way slower than I wanted for 750m, but it was an improvement over last year.
The bike course was fun – decent hill out of T1, rather decent rollers for the first few miles out of the park, then some fun descents down the road with just a couple rollers. Some steady climbs on the way back and those rollers again back to T2. I felt great the whole bike and my plan was to pound it since I had just gotten back into running and wasn’t worried about that for this race. Ended up with a very decent 16.9mph which I was thrilled with! I usually avg about 15mph so this was a great improvement.
Remember those rollers? Well we had to run up and down those…not nearly as much fun as biking up and down them…I probably walked half the run! I had no idea how my knees would hold up so I was extremely conservative. I did try to keep up with the 73yr old guy who passed me on the run but he was kind of a beast. I was at least ahead of the 12yr old kid I passed on the bike so that was good.
Was very happy to see the finish line and very happy with my choice to do the sprint! Knees felt great; there was great post-race snacking and I even met some new people! Probably the most exciting part of the day was when they called my name as the overall Olympic winner with a time of 1:54:19, and I was like oh…the timer didn’t get the memo that I switched to the sprint. :0 So I made sure to get that corrected! After all the timing was figured out, I did end up winning my AG! The girl who won overall female was in my group though – I have a lot of work to do!
